I’m going to tell you a story about a serial job hopper who figured out that being loyal to one company just does not work anymore. Many years back it was cool for a person to put in 20 years with one company and for some people it was their first and only company they have worked for. Serial job hoppers were not very popular back then.

The lies you have been told.

Since your first day of indoctrination you were told the rules over and over again. That in order to be successful you needed a college degree then get employed and work for the same employer for years then retire. As if you were a robot and not allowed to think outside the box. I used to believe the rhetoric back then and I was deep into it. I was so asleep that looking back I still cannot believe it. My blind faith was with those of authority who i felt would never steer me wrong.

Boy was I wrong!

Serial Job Hopper: Listening to grown ups talk at the table.

Back in my Parents house the Dinner Table was always the place people came sat down and talked about life and work as well as Politics while drinking coffee or a bottle of wine. As most of my friends and cousins would rather play I wanted to sit with the grown ups and listen to the topics they spoke about. I found that i learned more by listening about the things they have done and the things they achieved in their lives. Listen to the real talk about life and not some doctored version of it.

Sometimes I would hear them talk about how in their countries, governments used to murder and kill those who opposed them. These conversations changed my world view of make believe into the real world. Stories like the ones my Dad and his friends would talk about is why I became interested in Politics and History. My Dad was a Union guy and he believed in the working man being protected from Scabs (what they called those who were not Union) i remember him getting into heated conversations with people and at times will he bang his fist on the table to prove a point.

I never thought much about those conversations until I got older. My old man has been a big influence in my life and still is. He maybe an Asshole at times but I still appreciate it.

Serial Job Hopper: High School

It came quickly and from there the brainwashing became more intense as they continued to push the college agenda as if that was the only route for a person to go in life. I knew enough from those table conversations to know that life is never as straight forward as we think. While they continued to push college down people’s throats I instead decided to go another route ( already deciding to go my own way). I wanted to see the world and to give back to this great country so I went at 17 to the military recruiter and joined.

This made my Guidance Counselor extremely upset when she found out what I wanted to do. She even called me “Stupid” but i stood firm with my decision. While I read more about the world and listened to the older people talk i learned more and more. And i learned one very important thing and that thing is that no matter what you do you are in charge of your own life no one can tell you what to do or believe. You are alone and you have to learn quickly to gain an advantage in life while everyone else just follows.

Serial Job Hopper: College is just like High School.

I served my country and even during that time I learned from others. College To be honest i can never understand why people put so much emphasis on college since it’s just a repeat of High School all over again. Spending so many hours just sitting and listening to a Professor who never worked in the real world to teach a class that will never really help you.

“Oh but Jose those classes are what makes you a more well rounded person.”

Yeah that may be true but if you want to do that then go to the library. College does not prepare you for life mostly to be a cog in the elites lives.

At first I believed and worked and worked hard. Came on time every time and was rarely absent or even took a vacation. I thought that was how you succeed since that is what they conditioned me to do. But of course I began to look around me and notice how people worked so hard and some stayed longer than they should without pay and never getting anywhere. Then to find out they have been let go after so many years. The coming of the serial job hopper was forming in front of me!

It took a while for me to realize that what they taught us was Bull Shit!

The serial job hopper popped into the scene.

I noticed that there were a few people who jumped around from job to job without a care in the world! I was curious about these people and wondered why they were so happy and did not fear the higher ups. I needed to know and boy did I find out! Apparently that in order to be happy and make money is for you to become a serious job hopper. I thought job hopping was considered bad and in a way it is according to who you ask.

They told me that you should hop every 4 or 5 years so that your skills can become great and job hopping would also expose you to add more skills to your resume making you more and more valuable.

My first job I started making 29,000 a year in less than two years I jumped again to another job where I advanced my skills further and got a nice salary and better benefits making 33,000 a year. After less than 5 years I jumped again to another job better benefits upgrading my skills yet again and this time I was making 37,000 a year on and now I moved up and 15 years later i’m making high 70’s which has helped me support a family and still have some money left over even though in NY it’s not much money.

I’m looking to make another move since my wife wants to move to a warmer climate. I’m looking already to make a jump to another company. I already have an interview with a company that is interested in me. I still live in NY but they don’t know that!

Sometimes you have to tell white lies in order to get through the door. In life you have to use whatever is available to get you to the promise land.

Besides all business men lie!

I hopped and hopped and continued to hop and yet no one has asked me or even cares to ask why. If they do I usually tell them that

“I have gone as far as I could go in the position and I’m looking to further progress my career.”

Once i tell them that they usually stop right there and continue on with the interview.

I’m going to tell you this so that you know.

Interviewing for jobs is a numbers game.

So much goes into nailing that interview.

Things like how you feel that day. Are you in a good mood? Is your interviewer in a good mood. Is your interviewer looking stressed and on and on it goes. Even if you were the first person they interviewed! Can make a difference in whether getting or not getting the job. But after going on interviews for a while you kind of learn how it goes.

You will learn how to read people and whether or not you have to job. Some people are easier to read than others.

You need to work on your people skills eye contact be charming but not too much. As a serial job hopper you will be spending a lot of time looking through the job boards for opportunities to make more money and to continue to build your skills that are in demand.

Everyone is a specialist these days and very few are generalists. I rather be a generalist only because I can have the opportunity to learn many skills in case they need a specific job done. Value! Gentlemen is what you need to see yourself as! I think Victor Pride calls it “You Inc”

You see in order for you to take advantage of your career you have put yourself in companies where you will learn valuable skills.

And skills are extremely important in the corporate world.

Look at it like this…

They take away from you everyday when you show up giving up your valuable time that you could probably be building something of your own like a business so why not take from them in form of learning or further advancing your skills.

You see it benefits them as well as it will also be benefiting you. Never be at the knees of your employer! Like some slave! Be smart and learn to take advantage of the situation and build your value!

As you continue your skills part of your resume will be bulging with the latest and greatest!

You will have headhunters calling and emailing you jobs just about everyday. When I check my emails which is every day I always get emails from head hunters trying to push their open positions whether full time or contract.

To be a serious job hopper takes practice.

I have to admit at first it was a slow start but once you get your bearings you too can become a serious job hopper.

Serial Job Hopper: Conclusion:

Now i understand that this article may be a bit outrageous but to be honest everything I said was the truth and not lies. I have no reason to lie to you only because you guys are my friends. Remember no one will give you any help in progressing your career. That my friends comes from you and no one else.

You want to have advanced skills? Become a Serial Job Hopper
